Supermarket cough medicines recalled over ‘foreign material’

A manufacturer is recalling several batches of cough medicine, including some it produces for Tesco and Asda, after “foreign material” was found in some bottles.

The investigation and analysis into the contamination "remains ongoing"

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that Bells Healthcare is recalling 18 batches of “dextromethorphan hydrobromide BP containing products”.

In a recall notification updated today (January 22), it said that this was “a precautionary measure due to foreign material detected in some bottles”.

“The contamination was identified by a single customer complaint and the investigation and analysis remains ongoing,” according to the MHRA.

The affected products include Tesco Health Dry Cough Relief 200ml, Asda Strong Dry Tickly Cough 200ml, Almus Dry Cough Relief & Bells Dual Action Dry Cough, it said.

It added that pharmacists must “stop supplying the listed batches immediately, quarantine all remaining stock and return it to [their] supplier”.

Patients should also be “vigilant for any visible contamination and contact a healthcare professional if they have any concerns “, the MHRA said.

The notification, first published on January 21, was updated after Bells Healthcare “erroneously provided incorrect information pertaining to the expiry date of several batches”, it added.
