Only pharmacy in Aberdeenshire village sold to local chain

The only pharmacy in the Aberdeenshire village Balmedie has been bought by an expanding local pharmacy group for an undisclosed price, a broker has announced.

Balmedie Pharmacy dispenses an average of 5,255 items a month

It was brought to market to allow former owner Brian Arris, who bought the business in 2004, to “pursue other pharmacy business opportunities”, Christie & Co said today (April 18).

The pharmacy was snapped up by "local expanding multiple operator" JMF Healthcare Limited, making Balmedie Pharmacy the fourth site in the chain's portfolio.

The company already has pharmacies in Garthdee, Newtonhill and Edzell, Christie & Co said.

Balmedie Pharmacy dispenses “an average of 5,255 items per month”, the broker added.

Mr Arris said he was “sad to see the business go” and praised the “excellent staff” who had “helped grow the pharmacy from scratch” since 2004.

The team has “all put our hearts and souls into providing good pharmaceutical care for the village and surrounding area”, he added.

And he is “confident everyone is left in safe hands” with the new owners, he said.

It comes as a pharmacy in Kent was snapped up earlier this month (April 12) by a “young family” after attracting “multiple bids”.

“Unprecedented” number of pharmacies on market

Pharmacist and director of JMF Healthcare Limited, John Fowlie, said he was “delighted to add Balmedie Pharmacy” to the group.

He also thanked Mr Arris for his “co-operation in making this acquisition straightforward”.

Director of medical at Christie & Co Karl Clezy said the sale of the pharmacy had attracted interest from existing pharmacy owners in the Aberdeenshire area because of the “important role it plays in the Balmedie community” and “given that the closest pharmacies are many miles away in Aberdeen”.

The broker is “finding buyers are still looking for good quality independent pharmacies that offer a reliable service to their patients” and there are “an unprecedented number of pharmacies on the market recently”, he added.

Christie & Co said it expects Balmedie Pharmacy to "benefit" from new housing developments in the local area, including plans for hundreds of new homes in Balmedie and the nearby Trump Menie Estate and Blackdog Village.
