What to buy for a newly qualified pharmacist?

Pharmacists who have recently passed their summer registration assessment or MPharm deserve a treat for all their hard work. So what are the best gifts to get for a newly qualified pharmacist?

You may know a newly qualified pharmacist who has started working at your pharmacy, has just passed their registration assessment last month, or even someone who has finished the final year of theMPharm.

What’s the best gift you can give them after all their hard work to becoming a pharmacist?

Social media users took to Reddit to ask the question, with some sarcastic answers such as grabbing copies of the British National Formulary (BNF) or the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s (RPS) Medicines, Ethics and Practice (MEP) to add to their book shelves.

But we’ve rounded up the best of theirs and our suggestions of what fun treats you should give to a new pharmacist:

The Poetry Pharmacy opened in London this June stocking dozens of small and large prescription bottles containing poems in capsules to deal with your “emotional ailments”. Visit the flagship store in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire for those who cannot get to London.

Do you feel like you have a daily prescription for tea or coffee? Personalise one of these prescription mugs to gift to a pharmacist.

Paying for a 1-month subscription to Netflix may be an option if they are true crime doc fans, as The Pharmacist follows a Louisiana pharmacist identifying his son's killer which involves getting evidence on a "pill mill" doctor.

Going on a visit to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Museum will open the newly qualified pharmacist’s eyes to the fascinating history of pharmacy where they can learn about how medicine has changed over the last few hundred years.

Maybe a little more functional, but this book was highly recommended by one Reddit user to keep on top of the most up-to-date guide on how to safely prescribe the most common classes of drugs.

Cookie Cutter

Does your newly qualified pharmacist fancy themselves as a baker? Grab this pill bottle cookie cutter so they can shape some pharmacy-themed baked goods.

Pharmacists use pens all the time, so why not bling up their stationery with a pharmacy-themed pen that has a variety of pills displayed in the pen!

If you’re worried a fellow team member is going to steal your pill pen, why not go for something more practical and get a lanyard pen which can clip onto your clothes or lanyard while at work.

If you can get to Newton Abbot in Devon easily, check out The Pharmacy Café together! The “iconic” premise was opened as a pharmacy “in 1877 by John Biddings” and has gone from offering “pills, potions and posh perfumes” to cakes and cream teas – but it’s up for sale so pay a visit before it is snapped up off the market!
