Well launches pharmacy in WH Smith at Birmingham Airport

Well’s latest branch has opened in a WH Smith store in Birmingham Airport - the newest in a series of partnerships with the retailer.

This is the fourth Well Pharmacy to open inside WH Smith stores in travel locations

Well Pharmacy this week (May 22) announced that it has opened a new branch “located inside WH Smith’s flagship airside store in Birmingham Airport”.

The branch will introduce a “wide selection of pharmacy products and expert healthcare services” in addition to the retailer’s “range of health and beauty” products, the multiple said.

Customers will benefit from “a qualified in-store pharmacist” and be able to access a variety of “over-the-counter (OTC) medicines including pharmacy-only (P) medicines and Well’s own-labelled products”, it added.

This is the fourth Well Pharmacy to open inside WH Smith stores in travel locations, after openings in Gatwick airport in 2019, Heathrow airport in 2020 and London Euston train station in 2021.

WH Smith previously announced in April last year that it would “refit” its “largest store at Birmingham airport” to incorporate pharmacy products in summer 2023.

It remains unclear what caused the apparent delay to the launch.

“One-stop shop”

Well chief retail officer Andrew Caplan said that the multiple was “delighted to continue to work in partnership with WH Smith in providing a one-stop shop for all travellers’ needs”.

Boots also operates a pharmacy in Birmingham Airport, however it declined to comment.

Meanwhile, WH Smith also said in April last year that its Euston branch was “performing very strongly” and that it would roll out pharmacy products across “eight major Network Rail locations”.

However, a spokesperson for WH Smith told C+D at the time that the new stores would not be run in partnership with Well Pharmacy and would not offer pharmacy services such as a dispensary, but would stock health and beauty retail ranges.

It also remains unclear when the eight expanded rail stores will open.

It comes as a Well Pharmacy employee was ordered to repay over £4k stolen from the till earlier this month.
