PSNI appoints new president following departure of Jim Livingstone

The Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has appointed a new president to its council, after Jim Livingstone’s eight-year tenure came to an end.

Geraldine O’Hare will become president from November 1, following the approval of her appointment by health minister Robin Swann last month (September 26).

A chartered and registered forensic psychologist, associate fellow, and a chartered scientist with the British Psychological Society, Dr O’Hare is an “accomplished leader” who has “extensive experience working with the health and justice sector, regulatory bodies and professional boards”, PSNI wrote in a statement.

Welcoming her appointment, PSNI CEO Trevor Patterson said her “experience and skills will be extremely valuable as council guides the organisation during a period of significant change within pharmacy and within regulation”.

Dr O’Hare’s term is expected to end no later than October 2026, meaning she is likely to oversee the addition of the pharmacy technician profession to PSNI’s register. The Department of Health initially set out the ambition for this profession to start being registered in Northern Ireland by 2025.

High delivery standards under Dr Livingstone

C+D understands that Dr Livingstone left PSNI at the end of September – and PSNI vice president Jonathan Patton has temporarily stepped up to acting president until Dr O’Hare joins the council in November.

Mr Patton commended Dr Livingstone’s tenure as president, applauding his "tremendous job” in leading the organisation during the COVID-19 pandemic during a time of “significant change and challenge”.

“Jim helped shape a new direction for council, strengthening its governance, bringing strategic thinking front and centre, and developing its skills and training,” Mr Patton added.

“He leaves PSNI and the council in a strong position going forward,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Mr Patterson said Dr Livingstone had demonstrated “exceptional dedication and commitment” during his tenure.

“Jim’s constructive challenge of the executive officers of the organisation ensured the highest standards of delivery. He also made full use of encouragement and humour, bringing a positive influence on the culture of the business.

“He will be missed by all those who work for the PSNI, and I wish him every success in the next challenge he chooses to accept,” he added.
