Scottish government confirms plans to scrap prescription charges

Scottish health minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced that the Scottish government is to press ahead with plans to scrap prescription charges for all.

Sturgeon said at the SNP Conference last weekend that the prescription charge would be scrapped from April next year.

The announcement has been made ahead of Scottish parliamentiary elections next year.

RPS Scotland welcomed the change and a spokesperson said: “In general pharmacists in Scotland have supported the reduction over the past three years due to the belief that there should be no barriers to healthcare.”

The charges for prescriptions in Scotland have been gradually cut over the past few years.
